Status update and Firefly colours

We are on page 133 of the layout for Bulletproof Blues Second Edition. We had hoped to make more progress over the weekend, but we spent a lot of time revising some of the tables to make them more readable. We think people will be happy with the result.

Below is the full colour illustration of Firefly, by artist Justin Nichol. Like all of the art in game, this is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license. Please consider supporting the artist, Justin Nichol, on Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/justinnichol

Black Steel, The Hidden Blade

Here is the full colour version of Tommy Lee, also known as Black Steel, “The Hidden Blade”. Black Steel was the winning character in the GagMen RPG Podcast character contest.

Black Steel by Sean Izaakse

Tommy’s father was Korean, and his mother was an African-American US diplomat stationed in South Korea. His sculpted profile and green eyes gives him striking good looks, but his features are rounded enough to make him inviting rather than intimidating. He is always impeccably dressed when in his civilian identity; as Black Steel, he wears a black gi paired with a deep hood and a domino mask.

At the peak of human ability, even without his powers Tommy would be a deadly foe. But add in his ability to teleport, control kinetic energy, and mark targets, and you get an implacable hunter, able to reach targets where they think they are safest.

Last day for our contests!

Today is the final day to enter our two contests. You must submit your entry or entries by midnight tonight in order to qualify!

The big contest is being sponsored by the GagMen podcast, and the winner gets their character illustrated by brilliant comicbook artist Sean Izaakse.

Sean Izaakse preview 01

That’s a great prize even if you have no interest in anything else that comes with it (everything at the “Kalos Team-Up” reward level from the Bulletproof Blues Second Edition Kickstarter — that’s all the PDFs, a print version of the game, plus your character will be featured in Bulletproof Blues Second Edition).

The second contest is to redesign the character sheet format used in the rulebook. The winner gets a print copy of Bulletproof Blues Second Edition, and their name in the credits. Alternately, if you already have a copy of the game or simply would prefer cash, you can opt for a $40 cash reward instead of the book.

Here are the rules to both contests:

GagMen contest

The character can be any hero, villain, or even regular person that anyone could find in the Bulletproof Blues universe.

Submission should include your name, email contact, and be no more than 1000 words, but could be as simple as a name. Pictures or photographs (for cosplayers) would also be acceptable, but please do not use a name or picture you don’t have the rights to use.

The character should be based in the contemporary world of Bulletproof Blues, or be capable of being used in the contemporary setting.

All character entries do not need to have statistics, though it would be helpful.

Four characters will be selected by the hosts of GagMen and those four finalists will be sent to Kalos Comics, who will select the winner. The winning character will be drawn by comic book artist Sean Izaakse and the character will be featured in Bulletproof Blues Second Edition. The winner will also receive a digital copy of the image, released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 US license. Entries accepted until March 31, 2014 at midnight east coast time.

Check out the GagMen site for full details!

Character sheet contest

Entering is easy! Just take one of the sample characters in Bulletproof Blues, and write, draw, or design a new format for the character’s write-up. The winner will receive credit in the second edition credits and a free print copy of the game (either the current edition, or, if they are willing to wait for it, the second edition). If the winner already has the book, or would just rather have cash, we’ll pay them $40 via PayPal.

Sketch: Manticore

Manticore sketch by Sean Izaakse

Counting down: two days until our Kickstarter for Bulletproof Blues Second Edition! This evening, Brandon Blackmoor (Evil Mastermind of Kalos Comics) sat in with Mike Lafferty, Sean Izaakse, and a few other gaming luminaries to discuss comics and their favorite “alternate continuities”. It should be posted to the BAMF! podcast in the next day or so, so keep an eye out!

[As always, I think I sounded like an idiot, and I wish I had talked more about the talented folks who will be contributing art and stretch goals for Bulletproof Blues Second Edition. Aaargh! — BSB]

However, we don’t want you to leave the Kalos Comics blog unsatisfied, so here is a sketch from Sean Izaakse, and one of our favorites: Chloe Zhang, also known in North America as Manticore. Chloe Zhang is the photogenic, famous, and brilliant daughter of Zhang Ka-shing, one of the twenty richest people in the world. Fun fact: In China, Chloe’s superhero persona is known as “Dragon’s Lovely Daughter”, while in Japan, she is known as “Super Demon Rider Girl”.

Sketch: Chthyra

Counting down: four days until our Kickstarter for Bulletproof Blues Second Edition! This is a sketch from Sean Izaakse: Chthyra, the Crawling Chaos. Chthyra is a psychic parasite from a reality in close proximity to our own, which travels to our reality in its astral form. As such, it does not have a physical form in our reality. When Chthyra manifests in our reality, it usually takes the form of an oily black-skinned humanoid, a shapeless mass of hairlike tendrils of darkness, or something in between the two….

Don’t forget about our contest! Take one of the characters from Bulletproof Blues, and write, draw, or design a new format for the character’s write-up at the back of Bulletproof Blues Second Edition. The winner will receive credit in the second edition credits and a free print copy of the game (either the current edition, or, if they are willing to wait for it, the second edition). Here are the characters to choose from:

The contest will run through the end of the Kickstarter, but don’t wait until the last minute. Send your contest entries to bblackmoor@kaloscomics.com.
